Janus Fabric: A Multi-functional Material Redefining Design

Expanding the Definition of Surface Materials

Janus Fabric originated from the idea to expand the definition of a simple surface material to a performing component. By adding a function to the material itself, designers Hyemin Kim, Minki Kim, and Jisu Lee have created a revolutionary concept that eliminates the need for additional components and complex production systems.

Janus Fabric is a new conceptual material that combines functionality and aesthetics. Its surface can work as a heating or lighting system, offering a range of possibilities for designers. The material diversity and incorporated functional system create multi-dimensional designs that are both visually appealing and practical.

Unlike traditional materials, Janus Fabric is not limited to a single purpose. It can be made of various base materials such as textile, mesh, film, wood, or metal. The designers have developed a silkscreen printing technique using Polyurethane and chemicals, which are applied to the base materials. This cost-effective method allows for the production of small quantities and offers a high degree of customization.

One of the unique properties of Janus Fabric is its versatility in terms of color and finishing. Different pigments can be used to create various effects, such as a reflective surface when glass powder is used. Additionally, the material itself is slip-proof and VOC-free, making it both safe and durable.

Designers and consumers have the freedom to design their own Janus Fabric by choosing the base material, functional system, surface patterns, color, and finishing. Despite its thin thickness and light weight, Janus Fabric can perform heating and lighting functions. This innovative material expands the possibilities for designers, offering a new level of creativity and functionality.

The Janus Fabric project was not without its challenges. The designers had to develop a working prototype using the right chemical mediums, which required countless tests. They also faced the challenge of helping designers understand the concept of Janus Fabric and its potential. Overcoming preconceived notions of material limitations was crucial in showcasing the flexibility and possibilities of this innovative material.

Since its introduction in 2013, Janus Fabric has garnered recognition and accolades. It won the Reddot Design Award Best of the Best in the same year and was awarded Bronze in the A' Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design Award in 2018. These prestigious awards highlight the ingenuity and creativity behind Janus Fabric and its contribution to the field of design.

Janus Fabric is not just a material; it is a game-changer in the world of design. By redefining the capabilities of surface materials, Hyemin Kim, Minki Kim, and Jisu Lee have opened up new possibilities for designers and consumers alike. With its unique properties and multi-functional nature, Janus Fabric is paving the way for a more innovative and sustainable future in design.
